County Beaches Get High Marks
San Diego beaches have some of the cleanest sand stretches in the state, but suffer when it comes to water pollution due to coastal sewage runoff. Heal the Bay’s annual assessment of beach cleanliness listed almost two dozen San Diego beaches on their excellent, year-round water quality list and 93 percent of San Diego locations tested received an A grade for the summer. Winter is more concerning, when sewage runoff and spills due to inclement weather force closures of beaches due to contamination. The biggest problem is pollution from the Tijuana River, whose sewage-filled waste flows regularly into the southernmost San Diego beaches.
